Walking in a winter wonderland can be a fabulous experience with its blankets of snow, hanging icicles and layers of crisp frost in the air. Yet for drivers, the beauty of winter can bring an avalanche of problems to the roads. Slippery streets, low lying fog and nervous drivers behind the wheel can all contribute to higher risks and this is when safe driving becomes even more imperative. It’s essential to consider safe driving tips when the cold starts to close in and to take a good look at your car, your driving habits and the weather outside before venturing out. These driving tips are here to help ensure that you stay safe on the roads this winter.
Winter Proof your Vehicle
Cars require a little extra TLC when the temperatures plummet and whether you are hiring a car or driving your own you need to make sure that the basics have been covered. Make sure that all your lights are in full working order including the fog lights as cold spells can bring bad visibility. Check your tyres to ensure that there is plenty of tread life left in them and if in doubt think about making the switch to winter tyres. The better prepared your car is for the cold weather the more stable it will be and the more confidence you will have when out on the roads.
Brush Up on Emergency Skills
Winter is one of those times where you may find yourself slipping and sliding on the streets and you should be prepared as to the best way to handle these conditions. The number one rule when it comes to emergency skills behind the wheel is not to panic. You should always brake gently and avoid thumping down on the brakes if you start to skid. Be especially careful when crossing bridges as this is where you can find black ice, and also avoid braking when hitting sharp bends and corners. Make sure that when driving you leave plenty of space between you and other drivers as your chances of having to perform an emergency stop are also heightened.
Don’t Leave Home Unprepared
Preparation is the key when it comes to effective winter driving and you shouldn’t leave home without thinking ahead. Take a few minutes in the morning to double check that your car is in order and let the engine warm up a little before you drive. Visibility is another imperative point to consider so make sure that window screens and mirrors are all clear and fog free. Route planning and leaving extra time to make your journeys will also help you to steer clear of rushing and avoiding those small and slippery roads. Sticking to major roads will help to boost your chances of driving on clear and well maintained surfaces. Finally make sure that you don’t leave home without bringing a mobile phone and a blanket should you find yourself stranded at the side of the road in an emergency.
